Halibut Chowder

One of our new winter favorites is Halibut Chowder.  Cory brought the recipe ( and the fish) back from Alaska.  I was a little leery at first, but it is so delicious!

Cooking the halibut with butter, garlic and green onions

One of my kitchen favorites is my Mario Batali Dutch oven...its red and pretty.  The splash over the side is from my sous chef :)

Not homemade biscuits...but still good!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday!  It is supposed to be in the 50's today!!!!  Don't get too jealous, we have cold temps and a snow storm arriving in like 3 days... Kansas City weather is nuts.

If you are looking for something crazy to read, check out The Quaid Conspiracy in the January issue of Vanity Fair.  Its about Randy and Evi Quaid and how Hollywood is trying to kill them and steal their royalty checks...They really believe this is happening to them.  Yikes.

Learning to be a better cook...

I am slowly learning to be a better cook.  When I had my first apartment with Melissa, I swore that I would never cook and that I had no interest in doing so.

Turns out you can only have pasta and frozen meals so many times before you want something homemade.  My mom is a great cook and if I wanted to eat like that,  I was going to have to learn.  Poor Cory has been along for the ride and has eaten more than a few questionable meals.  When I think back to what we ate our first year of living together, it is really sad.

This is what I have been up to lately...

Cranberries, soaked in simple syrup and rolled in sugar....Thanks Heidi!

This is one of my new favorites.  Chicken pot pie with homemade biscuits on top...HOMEMADE BISCUITS!!! I still can't believe I made biscuits.

Meatballs for spaghetti and meatballs.  These were super yummy. My camera battery died before I could get a shot of the bowl filled with noodles, sauce and meatballs.

Corn muffins!  I made them for thanksgiving, and I liked them even better than cornbread.

Shells stuffed with beef and cheese.  I LOVE cheesy goodness...I could eat cheese with every meal, if it wouldn't clog my arteries.

January in Kansas City

The great part of living south of Chicago is a winter with much less snow.  Apparently no one got the memo this year and we have had two big (for kansas city) snows.  I don't mind the snow, but the roads are TERRIBLE afterwards and people drive like they have lost their minds.

The only fun part this year has been playing with my camera in the snow.  Sometimes I like to pretend that I actually know what I am doing with this fancy camera.  Someday, I might...

Looking south down Belleview, the day after the snow.  Check out the amazing roads :)

And the thaw begins...

Perspective

Since I will eventually be posting food pics, its only fair that you know what I am forced to cook with...

Over the last five and a half years, I have almost perfected how to use our oven/stove.  It requires a thermometer in the oven, and baking everything about 10 minutes shorter than the recipe calls for.  You see that lovely stick...Cory had to make that so I could bake when he isn't home.  Othewise, the oven door will slam shut on my arms, while I'm holding a lasagna.

Someday, I will have a new kitchen, but unfortunately, my oven just keeps on kicking...I mean, what else would you expect out of a Frigidaire Custom Imperial?

I think my favorite part of the oven are the 3 dials that no longer do anything, but sound really fancy.

Inaugural Post

Well...hello!

This blogging thing is a new adventure for me, so please don't run away yet.  I finally decided that since Cory and I don't live in the same state as any of our family,  I should figure out a way to keep everyone up to date.  Plus, if I start a blog, I won't have to write a long letter to stick in our Christmas card this year.

Not that anyway is probably going to check this regularly...expect for my grandmas.
Hi Gramma! Hi Grandma!

It's a new year and I have a new camera ( a Canon Rebel T2i) so I have been documenting all of the Finley antics.  Mostly, I've been photographing food as I make new recipes.

I hope you come back to check this out once in awhile...and that I don't bore you too much!
